Kalimpong


Kalimpong is one secret but less known hill station of West Bengal, India. Kalimpong is placed at only distance of 50 kms from world admired tourist spot Darjeeling. The altitude of Kalimpong from sea level is 1250 m surrounded with the royal ranges of Shiwalik in Himalayas. Sources state that Kalimpong was ruled by kings of Bhutan till 19th century.

Buddhist monasteries are famous of Kalimpong with some famous exquisite valued temples. This hill station was under Bhutan till the British rulers captured the area and joined in Indian province. Local population of town is from Nepal’s origin. Because of less development people from Kalimpong shifted to developed areas for job opportunity.

Education level of Kalimpong is higher as there are some big boarding schools. People from Bhutan, Burma and Bangladesh are reaching to Kalimpong for higher studies.

Attraction of Kalimpong:
Crockety: initial location for voyagers is Crockety which is a type of bungalow constructed during British ruling period. It was built by wool traders in late 18th century with exquisite structural design.


Galingka: next is one more bungalow of Kalimpong known as Galingka. Constructed at ruling period of British Empire placed at royal background of Kanchenjunga peak.

Many other locations such as Morgan House, Nature Interpretation Centre, Durpin Dara Hill, Flower Nurseries, Saramsa Garden, Neora National Park, Catholic Church, Jang Dong Palriffo Brang, St Theresa Church, Tharpa Choeling Gompa, Thongsa Gompa, Hiking spot, river rafting, Samco Ropeway, Trekking, Teesta Bazaar, Dr. Graham’s Homes, Lava, Lolegaon, and Samthar Plateau are available for voyagers in Kalimpong.

Attaining to Kalimpong:
From Kolkata travelers have to cover the distance of Kolkata 646 kms to attain the destination. However, Delhi is 1448 kms away, Indore is 1675 kms away, Mumbai is 2298 kms away, and Chennai is 2361 kms away.          

By Train: closest rail hub is New Jalpaiguri located at only distance of 67 kms. Jalpaiguri is another traveling destination hence tourist can plan their trip as per holidays and packages. Private taxi from Jalpaiguri will charge around Rs 1,500 for Kalimpong. Trains for Jalpaiguri is available from Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad and few other cities.

By Air: nearby air hub is Bagdogra close to Siliguri located at only gap of 79 kms. Private taxi from airport is available at nominal charge of approx Rs 1,500. Bagdogra is the domestic airport having flights from Kolkata, Guwahati and Delhi. Travelers from abroad can reach to Kolkata or Delhi to attain the Kalimpong.

By Bus: Sikkim is close big city well connected through road, though the road to Kalimpong is little difficult but exciting and full of adventure. Charted and private buses are accessible from Bagdogra and Siliguri to Kalimpong.
