Belur Mutt



Famous religious place Belur Math is our next destination for Indian tourist places website. People also recognize this place as Belur Mutt which is the administration place of Shree Ramakrishna Math and group. This mutt was established by Shree Swami Vivekananda who was the student of famous Sadhu Shree Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. Hooghly River flows from Belur of Indian State West Bengal. The shrine of Belur is a spirit of movement of Ramakrishna group. The structural design expresses the combination of Hindu, Islamic and Christian motifs.

Representing the pleasant sounding coexistence of diverse beliefs in India the Belur Mutt depicts structures that look like the common sensitivity of the Muslim, Hindu and Christian locations of worship. This Mutt is the headquarters of Shree Ramakrishna Mission. It is open for public from 05:30 am to 10:30 am and 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm every day.

Past of Belur Mutt: Shree Swami Vivekananda reached from Colombo to India with a group of people with western disciples in January 1897. He established 2 monasteries of which one was located at Belur. This monastery becomes the headquarters of Mission of Ramakrishna group. The 2nd monastery was located at Mayavati in Himalaya ranges. Mayavati is close to Almora recognized as Advaita Ashrama. Function of these monasteries was to entertain and teach youth people who would ultimately turn into Sannyasy (Sadhu) of this Mission.

Shree Ramakrishna Temple: the shrine contain idol of Shree Ramakrishna Paramahamsa made of marble. The structural design of shrine was predicted by famous Guru Swami Vivekananda. Architect of shrine was Swami Vijnanananda. Construction of this holy place was completed on 14 January, 1938 on Makar Sankranti festival.

Swami Vivekananda Temple: the other spot for visitors is Swami Vivekananda Temple located at the place where Swami Vivekananda left his soul. His body was set fire in 1902 close to Belur Mutt. Bel tree in the temple area is spot where Swami Vivekananda sits and does mediation for hours. Body of Swami Vivekananda was cremated at this place. Swami Ji died on July 4, 1902 after evening poem. He completed the morning session and did evening prayer after which he left the body.

Holy Mother's temple: the shrine devoted to Sarada Devi is one more tourist spot of Belur.

Swami Brahmananda Temple: Belur is religious place having another spot know as Swami Brahmananda temple.

Ramakrishna Museum: The museum of two storeys is one more tourist spot of Belur Mutt. Museum is having huge collection of Swami Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Swami Vivekananda and many other people linked to Ramakrishna Group. Visitors can watch long coat of Swami Vivekananda, table of sister Nivedita and limb of Mrs Sevier. These are prime presented objects in Museum.

Attain Belur Mutt:
By Rail: Nearest and biggest railway hub to reach Belur are Howrah and Sealdah. These railway stations of Kolkata are linked to almost every city of India. For local transport people can use metro rail of Kolkata.

By Air: NSCBIA (Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport) is available for abroad and local tourist for Belur. Airport is positioned at only distance of 17 kms at Dumdum from Kolkata.

By Road: State transports of west Bengal allow visitors to reach through bus easily. Buses for various cities from Kolkata is available to attaining to Belur is easy and trouble free.
