The town name is derived from Nagur which means land of serpent lords. Nagapattinam town was the flourishing and important political city of Chola Mandalam. Voyagers can visit the monuments and historical places that state the glory of Chola rulers. One of the oldest temples of Chola emperors is 6th century Shiva temple known as Nagapattinam Kayaroganam. Danish Fort: A beautifully constructed fort of 1620 is still standing hard for you. This marvelous structural designed building was renovated few years back. Local management is handing the fort properly. Danish fort is having another name as Dutch fort.



Arumuga Swami Temple: A shrine located in village Porulvaithacheri is next spot for travelers. This holy place is only 6 km away from Nagapattinam. A beautiful idol of Subramanium Swami is placed and devotees are regularly visiting to temple for blessings of Lord Subramanium.

Kayarohana Swami Temple: A temple listed in 7 big shrines of Nagapattinam is next location. The shrine is located in village Vidangar and local people recognize the temple as Neelayadakshi. Idol of Kayarohana Swami in the form of God Shiva is major attraction of temple.



Nellukadai Mariamman Shrine: Nagapattinam is the holy place and there are countless temples in the town. Nellukadai Mariamman shrine is one of them famous as Mariamman temple.



Sikkal Singaravelan Shrine: Another temple known as Sikkal Singaravelan is one more holy location. However, the other name of temple is Sri Singaravelar Saba. It is the tiny temple in small village Sikkal.



Soundararaja Perumal Temple: A strong hold temple known as Soundaryaraja Perumal is other place for voyagers. This shrine is located in central part of the Nagapattinam city. 1000s of people participate in Kumba abhishekam held in the temple.



Kodikkarai beach: Nature attraction is always preferred by the voyagers. If you are in Nagapattinam then you must reach to Kodikkarai beach. This beach is positioned in south direction of the town. This beach is having another name as Point Calimere.

If you are coming from Chennai then you have to travel for 333 km, though Coimbatore is 369 km away, Bangalore is 431 kms away, Hyderabad is 899 kms away and Pune is 1276 km far from Nagapattinam.

By Train: Nagapattinam railway station is properly linked to big cities of India. Trains from Chennai, Tiruchirapalli, Kumbakonam, Thanjavur, Ernakulam, Karaikal, Vailankanni, Vasco Da Gama, BhubaneswarCoimbatore, Karaikal, Madurai, Mannargudi, Mysore, Tiruchendur, Varanasi and many other cities are available in good quantity.

By Air: Closest airport for Nagapattinam is Tiruchirappalli/Trichy. The distance between Nagapattinam and Tiruchirappalli/Trichy is only 150 km. This airport is properly connected to major domestic airports of India such as ChennaiNew DelhiBangalore, etc.

By Bus: State buses are available for Nagapattinam. Travelers can hire the bus from KarnatakaKerala and AP (Andhra Pradesh) cities. Frequent bus services are available from Velankanni, KanyakumariMaduraiChennaiPondicherryTiruchirappalli/Trichy, Thanjavur and Trivandrum.
